A one day course presented by the Great North Maths Hub, specifically focusing upon Maths in the Curriculum for special children.

Course date :

3 December 2015,  9 - 3.30pm
Royal Station Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne

This course will be delivered by Les Staves, who has worked with very special children since 1973.  He was the head teacher of an outstanding special school.  Since 1999 he has been a trainer and author with an international reputation.

His training sessions are often described as inspirational, and always contain direct examples of children working, strategies and resources for teaching.  He has acted as a consultant for national education agencies for who he wrote special needs curriculum guidance and materials for pupils working across P scales.

Some of his writings can be found on the website www.veryspecialmaths.co.uk

How is the session structured?

The session will explore the area of maths for children who may be working towards level one for many years.  We will explore how it enables them to observe, share and use information about their surroundings and occurrences in their lives, emphasising its role in communication, developing thinking, social skills and problem solving.

The course covers learning from the sensory beginnings, looks at how counting develops up to the development of early mathematical processes.  It will also prompt us to think about developing and delivering an appropriate 'Maths' curriculum, making interpretations of the 2014 revisions National Curriculum.

The day will provide lots of practical ideas for resources and teaching.  You are assured of a very high level of expertise and experience supported by plenty of laughter, practical tips and advice on great value resource ideas.

Who should participate in this programme?

This course is open to Teachers and SEN Coordinators working in schools in the Northumberland, Tyne, Wear and Country Durham areas.  Delegates must work with special children who are learning at the most fundamental levels, across the P scales or bridging into the National Curriculum outside age related norms.
