Mantle of the Expert (MoE) was developed by Dr. Dorothy Heathcote right here in Newcastle. Essentially, it is a method by which children can understand the curriculum in a meaningful way through taking on the role of a team responsible experts for carrying out important commissions set by an imagined client. These commissions provide an exciting context for learning, empowers children and gives them a purpose to write, problem solve and investigate.

If you’re thinking about introducing mantle into your schools then you need to be prepared to invest time and money for training because understanding mantle isn’t easy. It pushes staff to their limits and takes an awful lot of deep, creative thinking. The results are stunning though. Our children have developed confidence, resilience and articulacy. They can empathise, debate and they write passionately because they have a purpose. They have a sense of ambition now that was definitely lacking before, because they’ve ‘worked’ as medics, historians, architects and curates. They know it isn’t real, but they’re serious about the task in hand.

So come along and see it in action. We will be showing how Mantle works in our school during two morning sessions followed by lunch and a workshop in the afternoon.
